And So Week Four Begins

Wow...I'm in the last 7 days of my Whole 30.  Who knew?

As I was thinking about what comes after the Whole 30 (or Whole 30 Phase II), I started thinking about what I would add back into my diet.  What have I been missing that I can't wait to add back in?

Um...

I can't think of anything.  (Of course I've only begun reading, It Starts With Food so we'll see what they recommend.)

Part of the reason is that I haven't been as strict as I could have been the last three weeks.  I eat goat cheese on my massive lunch salad every day.  I've had two lattes.  I drink diet sodas and put non-dairy creamer in my coffee.  I ate a brownie.  I ate greek yogurt one day when there was nothing else available. (Note...watch your um...digestive system if you go without yogurt for awhile and then add it back in.)  I chew sugarless gum when I drive.  Perhaps those things are "allowed" after the 30 days are over.  I'll have to keep reading.

For now I guess I'll just keep going the way I'm going and doing what I'm doing.  My nephew is getting married on September 14th and the hubs and I are driving to OK for the wedding (I can't WAIT).  It's a road trip...and a wedding.  There will be barbeque...and "road" food...and wedding cake.  While it's true that I'll be in between Whole 30's, I still need to mind my p's and q's lest I blow up like that little girl in Willy Wonka.  I'll be very interested to see how I behave when turned loose on the world.  No matter what, I do not want to wake up my beast.  He's sleeping comfortably and I want him to stay that way.

I like the quiet in my head.

When I return I will embark on the next 30 days of clean eating where I eliminate diet soda and coffee creamer from my diet.  This morning I decided to look at the ingredients of each...

Pepsi Max
Carbonated water, caramel color, phosphoric acid, aspartame, potassium benzoate (preserves freshness), caffeine, natural flavor, acesulfame potassium, citric acid, calcium disodium EDTA (to protect flavor), panax ginseng extract.

International Delights French Vanilla Coffee Creamer
Water, cane sugar, palm oil.  Contains 2% or less of each of the following: sodium caseinate, dipotassium phosphate, natural and artificial flavors, mono and diglycerides, sodium stearoyl lactylate, polysorbate 60, carrageenan, salt.

Uh...well if that ain't a shitstorm of chemicals I don't know what is.  Actually, I Googled some of these things and they aren't as bad as I thought they would be.  But they are still chemicals and processed and don't belong in my body.  Period.

Overall I think I'm doing pretty damn good (bad grammar intended).  Last night the hubs made spaghetti (with my blessing) and some very yummy, very large meatballs.  I ate two meatballs and had some watermelon and that was perfect.  I had already consumed my daily dose of two eggs and my massive lunch salad where I get a lot of my veggies so going light on dinner was fine.  Plus, I felt great and that's the real test.  I'm learning to listen to the cues my body gives me about what I need and when.

It's nice to be home.

  1. Glad to hear you chew gum too. Us food sinners love good company. lol
You know the first few days I was hungry a lot. Now not so much. I have to make myself eat because my trainer had told me not to go much past 3 hours without something in order to keep my metabolism going. I don't really miss anything either.....although last night was challenging as I was just sitting there watching HGTV which I never have a chance to do, and all I could think of was what could I snack on. I got about a 1/3 of a cup of dry roasted with sea salt, sunflower kernels, and poured them into a very tiny little dish, and proceeded to eat them one at a time...once again, it helped with that hand to mouth need. When my time is up, I don't think I'm going to stop...I will modify,, but not stop because it is too easy, wayyyyy too easy, to fall right back into my old habits.

    1. Oh I totally hear you on that one. For me it's the sugar. Once or twice may be all right but it's just like the alcohol, it wouldn't take anything for me to be back where I was. I've gained and lost the same 15 pounds about six times now. I need to be done.

I'm making myself eat also. At first I was eating everything in sight trying to stave off the cravings. Now...not so much. If I have a craving it's for fruit or protein and I'm never really that hungry.

I think that's why I think this will work long term. I've known for a while now that the sugar had to go. Not sure why I was resisting SO HARD.

I need to get to gettin on moving this body more too.

  2. One of the things that lasted from my mostly-sugar free January, was changing to sugar free coffee creamer instead of fat free. I am addicted to Coffee Mate French Vanilla creamer. It's why I drink coffee. Not for the caffeine. LOL

Try giving it up totally, Sherry, but if it doesn't work, they make sugar free vanilla syrups and CoffeeMate and International D. both have sugar free versions of the vanilla creamer. OR. You could go with skim milk or half and half.

Be sure to check out MishedUp, she commented on your comment on my post (gah that's a lot of words). Y'all probably have a lot in common, she's sober too; 3.5 years.

  4. Of all the diet/zero drinks Pepsi Max is the one I think is the closest to tasting ok - most others I can't stand the taste of.

My son pointed out that we often buy flavoured carbonated water - I'd thought this would be better for us but he pointed out there is more sugar in that than in 7UP! Really I should just get it out the tap I suppose but then that has fluoride in it for a start where do you stop?

  5. I haven't had a soda in a long time. You really don't miss it after the first month or so. It's like alcohol for me though. If I drink it at all, I want it at least once a day....and really more. So it's water, green tea, and smoothies for me.

  6. So many great comments. What a lot we are. We kick the booze and then a host of other vices to kick too. Gotta love the energy of a recovered/ing alcoholic. There are no limits to what we accomplish.

No matter how much we do it imperfectly, at least we give it a try. I've given it all up except cookies. Can't live without them ... or could I??? Best to you this next week.

It's good to catch up to my bloggers.

    1. I guess we figure if we've given up alcohol - we can do ANYTHING! And the fact is...we can!
