Things I've Noticed While Away

While I was "away" from the Whole 30 eating plan I noticed a few things that really surprised me...a lot.

I like fruit.  I've never been a fruit eater preferring to get my carbohydrates in a simpler form...white bread, pasta, sugar.  I could never develop a taste for it...until now.  Yay Whole 30.

Eating like crap for a few days really did lower my immune system.  I was reading "It Starts With Food" last night and it turns out that it CAN happen.  Shit.

Crap tastes like...well...crap.  The food we ate on the road (mainly McDonalds) not only didn't appeal to me when I thought about it, it mainly tasted like salt, chemicals, and cardboard.

Eating sugar for a brief period did not make me lose my mind AND it did not wake my beast.  If I'm honest, it didn't even taste that good.  I was good...but when I weigh all the bad stuff with a little bit of just wasn't worth it.  I'm also not craving it.  Hmmm..,

I guess I thought that by eating garbage I would undo all the good I had done and go right back to my old habits.  Not true at all.  If anything, I craved the good habits I had cultivated and wanted to get back to them as soon as possible.

So to those of you just getting started, hang in there for at least two weeks.  Apparently our bodies are smarter than we are...



  1. I love fruit! And I just stick to grilled chicken sandwiches without mayo when I have to eat ff. You are so right; when you get used to real food, McD's is NASTY. I eat leftovers, sandwiches, or salad's everyday at work without pause now. I have no desire to eat that crap.

  2. I am starving. Last night I just wanted to eat something but i didnt even know what I really wanted. Evenings are the hardest for me because I have always kind of grazed then. That was the time for sweets and now I cant do that, which leaves me feeling unsettled. I am so glad you decided to make this a group effort, because I would not being doing this on my own. Thanks so much for all the info and links on Whole 30.

  3. I am envious of your discipline and timing, as this is when halloween candy beckons and I feel like how I handle it sets the tone for the long holiday season. Like what you said about craving the good eating habits you've practiced before. Might try the Whole 30 at some point, you're making it sound great.

    I've been eating like crap since I've gotten sober 36 days ago! I've gained 11 pounds and reading your posts the last couple of days has been inspiring to me!

    I must focus on my body again! I'm uncomfortable in my own skin!

    I want to eat the way you describe it in this post but I can't control myself when it comes to sweets and chips. I almost become this instant bitch when I don't allow myself to have that chocolate bar that someone is selling! I almost have trouble breathing. I can't use alcohol anymore so I sometimes feel lost in my body.

    Crazy eh! I just want to get self control again.....with food!!!


    1. Oh Jen...if I'm honest I'm going to tell you not to worry about your weight right now. Your sobriety is the most important thing and if it means a few pounds (you run right? keep running) then so be it. If you need a chocolate bar to get over the bad times then eat that fucking chocolate! Now is really not the time to worry about anything except staying sober. Seriously.

      If you want to feel like you're doing something good for your body, just give up one thing for 30 days. Choose pasta, or diet soda, or cookies. But just one thing. In the next 30 days you can choose something else.

      I promise you will have plenty of time to focus on your weight and eating habits.

      Right now...JUST STAY SOBER. The magic will happen.
