Today's the Day!

This day could not have come at a better time.  I just spent the last six days traveling and celebrating and eating nothing but CRAP.  The road doesn't offer many options (never did see another grocery store) and while in OK I tried to eat well but, after all, it was a wedding!  I also caught my granddaughter's cold which I'm (likely erroneously) blaming on the fact that my diet was so bad while I was there.  You know...eating like crap likely lowered my immune system?  Who knows if it's true or not - but it works for me.

So even though I'm stuffed up and have a sore throat, I am ready to rock this thing.  Here's my plan...be sure to share yours as well.  Remember that you don't have to be perfect.  Even a small step in the right direction will be enough.  Just commit to 30 days and let the magic unfold on its own.  I promise it will.

  • No sugar of any kind including artificial sweeteners or natural sweeteners
  • No dairy (no more goat cheese on my salad and no more lattes...not even once a week)
  • No legumes
  • No grains
  • No alcohol (duh)
  • Nothing with more than 3 ingredients or ingredients I can't pronounce.

Instead I'll select whole, nutrient rich food that will nourish my body instead of my mind.  Yep...you read that right.  During my previous Whole 30 I realized that the hold sugar had on me (like the hold alcohol had on me) was more about what was going on in my head than what was going on in my stomach.

I know...I can be dense sometimes.

I'm keeping my coffee creamer (sorry Mary and Mrs D) and the jury is out on Pepsi Max...I'm going to give that a valiant effort but I'm not making any promises.  I'm going to try.  (Yes...I said try.  Screw you Yoda.)

So how about you?  If you're already in the game how are you doing?  What are your challenges?  More importantly, what are your victories?  And if today is day one for you, what have you done to ensure your success?

Let's do this thing!

Namaste

  2. Yeehaw! I love eating this way. Did a shop today and got chicken, and fruit and lots of kale. I'm going to make a big egg, bacon, kale, and zucchini casserole for breakfast or to take to work for lunch. Hardboiled eggs! Tonight we'll have pork chops, mustard greens, and sweet potatoes. I'm going to make acorn squash soup.

I love the "nourish my body instead of my mind". Deep breaths instead of downing cookies. :)

  3. Day 9 here! Feeling good. Really good, it's so good to realise how much more filling the whole food is ... I'm hardly having to snack now between meals, if I make sure I have a big enough meal. Just had lunch egg/mushroom/ham omlette (cooked in ghee!) with a chopped fresh tomato on the side with basil leaves sprinkled over. Yesterday lunch was tinned tuna, leftover roasted sweet potatoes and sautéed cabbage from night before and a chopped fresh tomato. Often I'll chop up and roast a sweet potato for lunch (the hardest meal where before I'd reach for bread or crackers), also chopped whole avocado with tomato, red onion and basil plus olive oil and balsamic vinegar! Great breakfast fritter recipe: 1 banana mashed, 1 egg lightly beaten, small handful blueberries, good shake cinnamon. Fry in coconut oil and serve with fresh chopped fruit! So great you got me on to this Sherry.. making a big difference to my life xxxx

    1. You know...I always forget about sweet potatoes! I think I need to consider adding those into my daily routine. Haven't tried ghee yet but we use very little butter anyway.

I know what you mean about snacking. When I think about snacking now I have to stop and think...am I really hungry? If I am hungry why am I hungry? Did I not eat enough at my last meal?

Usually I'm just bored and that's a lot easier to fix.

      Rock on Mrs. D!

  4. Today is officially day 1. I got halfway through yesterday when I realized it was the 17th not the 18th, so i will do this for 31 days. I did ok until nighttime when I started to crave sweets. I ended up just going to bed so I wouldn't be tempted. i hope to break this sweet habit in 30 days.

    1. Just like when I got sober...I slept a lot in those first two weeks. That is...when I wasn't threatening my husband with kitchen utensils.

  5. Ok, I have been going strong and then weak since Sept 7 I think....for the most part I do ok. The things I am allowing myself this time around is...

    feta cheese
    coffee cream
and 2 drinks a day with artificial sweetener (if I feel I need them) Its usually a diet coke and then an iced coffee with 1 sweet n low mid-day to keep me going. Some days it will be just one, and some days it will be none.

Nuts have been my salvation. When I am out working I have a banana and a bag of Starbucks fruit and nuts....its 1.5 ounces. I eat eggs and sausage for breakfast, fruit, I have been having Greek Olives with feta cheese (which is why I have to continue to allow it....it is so good!) and shredded chicken and fruit for lunch. Its all stuff I can buy in the grocery store deli on my work days. I LOVE that lunch. Since I started on the 7th I have lost 8 lbs. If I would get my self moving again and work out, I know the weight would just drop off.

I found some "ice cream" called Arctic Zero. It is for lactose intolerant people, gluten free, fat free, 14 grams of whey protein. 6g carbs, and 5g sugar but its organic cane sugar. And every now and then I have a bite or two. Do you think its sinful? Or allowed?

    1. I think that if you've managed to lose EIGHT POUNDS already then you should just keep doing whatever you're doing!!! As long as you feel good and you are able to keep it up - whatever gets you through the night!

      Great job!

  6. Wonderful stuff, Sherry. Very inspiring posts about this - full on health and wellbeing - such a part of wholeness and fulfillment, in all areas of your life. We've abused our bodies long enough, and I think that not only do we take care of our spiritual and emotional side, but our physical side too. For me, it's cyclical and symbiotic - take care of the body and the body takes care of us, and is a healthier vessel for our souls to do the work.

    Blessings,
    Paul

    1. So well said Paul. I love the thought of my body being a vessel for the soul that I love so much. Maybe if I think about it that way I'll be kinder to the vessel.

  7. I'm visiting my youngest kid and his kids and fixing all those really healthy comfort foods like mac and cheese made with heavy cream. But next week I'm back home and the cap'n is out of town and so is the ice cream so I'm on it, not the Whole 30, but my Dr. Gourmet. My body can't wait!

    1. Yay! And Whole 30 isn't exactly like South Beach or Atkins. It's more of a way to detox (in my case anyway) from all the sugar and carbs that were killing me. Once they're gone (after the first 30 days really) you are supposed to start adding things back into you diet, one at a time, to determine what is good for you and what isn't.

I just know that sugar and simple carbs make me feel like crap. I've always been sensitive to dairy. Legumes I will probably add back in to my diet but in smaller doses.

What is Dr. Gourmet? Fill us in my friend!
